Back to Basics. How to get MORE success

Posted on September 9, 2015

Forget the bells and whistles. Get back to basics.

What makes (and keeps) the successful, successful?

The 2014 Winter Olympic Games are underway. This event hasn’t received the level of hype that the 2012 Summer Games did, yet, within the complexities, spin, controversy and fear of terrorism, there’s a simple and powerful thought: Men and women who have dedicated their lives to being the best at what they do.

For many of the athletes from richer nations, they have benefitted from the intervention of technology to help them do more, run faster, throw further and jump higher. And where their country did not have the weather or the technology, the passion and desire to be the best fuelled their creativity to propel them to the international stage [e.g. The Jamaican Bobsled team of the 1988 Winter Olympics – and who, by the way are competing in the 2014 Games in Sochi)

Whether they are fuelled by passion, talent or technology, the best of the best focus on the basics.Bolt and Quarrie, Student and Teach

I recall a conversation I had with Don Quarrie, Olympic and Commonwealth champion runner and coach to the Jamaican sprint team, about the focus on the basics to get the slight edge and win the race. During the conversation he discussed how the simple – but important – way that a runner gets into the starting block and positions his/her body could be the difference between first and second place.

“when you add understanding to talent and activity you often get ‘flow’”

Even the angle that the runners hold their upper body during the first 10-15 meters of the 100 meters can mean the difference between Gold and NOTHING. When I say “gold and nothing” I’m referring to the fact that if you fail to get first, second or third place in an event like the finals at the Olympics… you can be the BEST in your country and amongst the BEST in the world and yet no one will know your name, face or even your end result…… all because you failed to implement the basics as well as the individuals in the top three.

So, what are the ‘basics’ for you? What does ‘good’ look like in order to be MORE successful at what you do?

“what you need is someone to remind you that you don’t need to be taught or told…… you need to be reminded!“

Chances are that you ALREADY know, but aren’t following through as well as you can.

If your first thoughts when I asked the question “what are the basics for you?” were

“I need to go to [X] or talk to [Y], or that I’m asking you to buy [Z]” to find out…….

then what you need is someone to remind you that you don’t need to be taught or told…… you need to be reminded!

By this I mean that if you didn’t apply or use ANY of the basics, you wouldn’t have

  • had ANY good results,
  • made ANY money or
  • dedicated ANY time to the skill that has gotten you this far.

I doubt if any of the above are true. What, however, is true is that you can do something well without understanding it – hence the limited results. It’s also true that when you add understanding to talent and activity you often get ‘flow’: get more benefit (profit) out of every activity with less effort (time/money) and stress (lack of trust in yourself, others and life).

Do know what it takes for YOU go get in ‘flow’? If you don’t then I suggest that your first step is to start here. In fact, there is a test that has been developed and is used across the globe that you can take that will point you in a direction that has, for many of my clients, resulted in insights and a deeper understanding of what to do next. It’s called Talent Dynamics. It’s just another resource that I share with the limited number of clients that I work with.

That’s what I do…. I work with business owners and support them to be business LEADERS. I do this by reminding you that you ALREADY know most of the basics…. and help you to APPLY what you know.

I also help to reveal new ways to apply the basics using new technologies and tools that will help you leverage what you do. Leverage means better results, more profit and less effort and stress.

The offer: Normally the test costs £49 to take, but as a reader of this blog you can take the test AND get a 40 minute i2insight session with me without paying me anything at all.

All you need to do is make a decision to help yourself, help others and APPLY what you know.

THAT is one of the first ‘basics’ in the book. Make a TRUE decision!

I’ll remind you of some of the other basics AND how to apply them to your own life and situation in my next blog post.
